He is not named on the Newmarket War Memorial

The Newmarket Journal of 1st May 1915 reported George's death and gave him as the son of George LEWIS, head lad to John Dawson, of St Albans Cottage, Fordham Road, Newmarket
"Soldiers Died" also has him as born in Newmarket (no such registration has been found) and his Personal Effects entry has father as George Alfred Lewis. The Cambridge Independent Press on 7th May 1915 also recorded his death.

It seems from all the documents found that he was George Frederick LEWIS, born on 10th May 1890 in Stoke by Clare (Risbridge qtr 2 4a:651) the son of George Albert and Grace Charlotte LEWIS (née HEAVENS). His father first came to Newmarket to be a stableboy at Heath House for Matthew DAWSON). He was baptised in St.John the Baptist, Stoke by Clare on 5th June 1890, his father's occupation given as "trainer".

1891 census...None of the family found in this census.

1901 census...His family were at Cheveley Road, Newmarket. His father was head lad in racing stable, aged 31, born in Cardiff. His mother was 29, born Newmarket. also there were his siblings, all Newmarket or Exning born: sisters Dorothy Grace [9],Violet [4] and Daisy [2]; brother William [7].

1911 census...Aged 20, he was an engine cleaner, boarding with the BLAKE family at 9A Tyler Street, Parkeston Essex. His parents were at Field Terrace Road, Newmarket with his siblings; Dorothy, Violet, Daisy, Freda [5] and Thora [2], brother Jackie [9]. His mother had borne 14 children but had lost 5. His mother died in 1912

George has so far not been identified in any other census.


His number is indicative of enlisting immediately on declaration of war.

The 2nd Suffolks were in the trenches in the Vierstraat area (between Kemmel and Ypres) at the time, in no specific action, but incurring casualties in a random fashion, at most 2 a day, some days none.
